Professional fellowships


Berkeley Repertory Theatre offers an 11.5-month fellowship program for serious-minded, highly motivated individuals who are ready to embark upon a professional theatre career. Fellows are directly exposed to the Theatre’s daily operations and given the opportunity to learn alongside an accomplished company of artists, administrators, guest directors and designers. While at Berkeley Rep, fellows are encouraged to fulfill as many career-building goals and objectives as possible, gaining both practical experience and professional contacts through the program. In addition to their specialized training, participants gain additional insight into the art and operations of a professional regional theatre through regularly scheduled seminars led by guest speakers and members of the Theatre’s senior staff. Additionally, all fellows serve as mentors for Berkeley Rep’s annual Teen One-Acts Festival.

Berkeley Rep seeks applicants who have already acquired basic training and experience in their field and are ready for the next step toward a career in professional theatre. Ideal candidates should be willing to engage in the creative process, eager to test the limits of their own ingenuity, and ready to join a professional, artistic community. Our goal is to help our fellows transition successfully from life as a college or university student into the world of theatre professionals.

The fellowship program requires an 11.5-month commitment. Fellows generally begin on July 15 and conclude on June 30. They are given a monthly allowance to help cover expenses, including transportation, and housing is available for all 15 fellows. For their participation in the fellowship program, fellows receive credit from San Jose State University.

Artistic and administrative fellowships

Bret C. Harte Directing (Artistic Administration)

This fellowship provides a chance to assist the directors of our productions throughout the season and to observe the inner workings of an artistic department at a major regional theatre. This includes the opportunity to attend and organize auditions, observe rehearsals, evaluate scripts, participate in artistic staff meetings, and discuss season planning. In addition to working closely with both our Artistic Director and our Director of Casting, you will have the opportunity to mentor a young director for the Teen One-Acts Festival and may assist with projects related to The Ground Floor, Berkeley Rep’s new play development lab. Ideal candidates will have experience and commitment to the art of directing, will be self-motivated, organized, and personable, and will thrive in a project-based learning environment.

Company Management

This fellowship focuses on the basics of artist hospitality, including arranging artist travel to and from Berkeley as well as their accommodations while here. Berkeley Rep’s company management team serves as the primary point of contact between visiting theatre artists, Berkeley Rep’s staff, and the Berkeley community. The fellow will develop skills in event planning by assisting with company-wide events and learn about general theatre management while assisting with contracts, the preparation and maintenance of budgets, and other administrative projects as required throughout the season. Ideal candidates will have a high degree of personal organization, strong interpersonal skills, discretion, facility with Excel, and a willingness to roll with the punches.

Development (Fundraising)

This fellowship focuses on in-depth knowledge of fundraising, which is essential to anyone considering a future leadership role in arts administration. The fellow is directly supervised by the Associate Director of Development throughout the season and mentored by the full development staff in all aspects of fundraising, including event management; grant-writing; working with volunteers; soliciting individual, corporate, and foundation gifts; and cultivating and stewarding donor relationships. Capstone projects include independently executing an opening night event and leading a targeted fundraising campaign for the School of Theatre’s Teen Council program.


This fellowship provides an opportunity for an individual to learn the inner workings of a multi-faceted theatre education program. The fellow will learn the full range of skills necessary for success in an arts education career through participating in mentored projects focusing on programming, training, community engagement, advocacy, marketing, and evaluation. Projects will be designed to grow in size and responsibility throughout the fellowship, depending on the fellow’s developing goals, interests, and skill level. Ideal candidates will have a primary interest in the programming and administration side of arts education programs and some experience teaching or working with young people.

Graphic Design

Theatre experience is not required to be considered for this position. This fellowship is part of Berkeley Rep’s graphic design team, which works within the Theatre’s marketing department, producing hundreds of pieces each year. The design fellow is mentored by the Art Director on the process of designing marketing materials such as print and web advertisements, magazines, direct mail packages, brochures, invitations, emails, signage, and more. The fellow will hone their design skills and learn how to take a multitude of projects from concept through production, gaining practical design experience in a fast-paced environment, learning marketing best practices, and participating in the workings of a high-energy team. By the end of the fellowship, the fellow will have created several high-quality portfolio pieces and be well-trained for a full-time job in design. Previous fellows have joined the staffs of Old Navy, Meyer Sound, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, San Francisco Symphony, The Wexner Center, YMCA, various global marketing agencies, and more. Ideal candidates have experience in graphics and layout programs (Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator), an understanding of fundamental design principles, and a desire to use your design powers for good. Candidates must submit samples of work or a link to an online portfolio (no original artwork, please).

Marketing / Digital Communications

This fellowship focuses on how Berkeley Rep’s marketing and communications department functions as a full-service agency with one client—Berkeley Rep—through the process of identifying, cultivating, and retaining an annual audience of 200,000 subscribers and single ticket patrons, as well as supporting our development department, School of Theatre, and The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep’s Center for the Creation and Development of New Work. Skills will be developed in strategic and tactical marketing disciplines including but not limited to brand management, campaign planning, creative development, advertising (digital/print/outdoor), promotions, audience development, event planning, media relations, direct mail, email marketing, social media content creation, data analysis, and budget management. Opportunities exist for a motivated fellow to work as part of a team and independently, enabling them to pursue interests and develop skills for the future. Box office and/or social media experience desirable. Previous marketing fellows have found employment with New York’s Signature Theatre Company, Playwrights Horizons, Court Theatre of Chicago, Memphis Council on the Arts, Berkeley Rep, and other exemplary arts organizations. Ideal candidate will have an enthusiasm for marketing, superior communication and organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects.

Peter F. Sloss Literary / Dramaturgy

This fellowship involves mentored training in writing for the show program, intensive reading and evaluating of play submissions, helping to plan and execute The Ground Floor Summer Residency Lab, supporting the rehearsal room, maintaining a script library, assisting young playwrights in the Teen One-Acts Festival, and other as-needed projects. The fellow will have opportunities to provide dramaturgical context, including writing and research. Ideal candidates will be extremely organized, personable, and possess a strong background in writing, as well as knowledge of dramaturgy and theatre. Candidates must submit, in addition to their other application materials, two writing samples (at least one must be about a play).

Production fellowships


This fellowship trains closely with the costume director and staff in all of the workings of a professional costume shop. Through hands-on experience, the fellow learns from nationally recognized designers and artisans. Depending on the fellow’s interests and skills, they may explore areas like costume construction, wig making, costume painting, distressing, and shopping for a modern show. Ideal candidates have basic sewing skills and an interest in creating and/or designing theatrical costumes.

Lighting / Electrics

This fellowship receives hands-on learning experience working with lighting designers for the mainstage season, and assists the Master Electrician using industry-standard software AutoCAD, VectorWorks, Spotlight, and Lightwright. In addition, the fellow is involved in all areas of electrics, including building practicals, hanging, focusing, and running of shows. Opportunities may exist to design for the School of Theatre and rentals. Ideal candidates have a background and interest in both electrics and design.

Production Management

This fellowship is immersed in all areas of the production management process at a professional regional theatre, through mentorship by the Production Manager and Associate Production Manager. This includes learning about leadership and management principles, creating and negotiating contracts, budgeting, expense tracking, creating and updating schedules, note taking, and assisting on facility rentals and events. This fellowship track culminates in serving as the production manager for the Teen One-Acts Festival. The ideal candidate is a self-driven individual, a creative problem-solver who has broad knowledge of technical theatre and excellent communication skills, thrives in a team atmosphere, and is articulate and imaginative.


This fellowship provides hands-on training in properties construction, carpentry, crafts, soft goods, research/shopping, and administration. Applicants should have previous prop/prop-related experience, a strong work ethic, and good communication skills. Ideal candidates are flexible and have a creative personality. Applicants must submit a digital portfolio for review (no original artwork, please).

Scenic Art

This fellowship follows the time-honored tradition of learning-by-doing. The scenic art fellow will learn the skills and techniques to enable them to participate as a full member of the scenic art team. Applicants with painting experience outside the realm of theatre, as well as those hoping to pursue a career in scenic design, are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates will have strong drawing and color-mixing skills. Applicants must submit a digital portfolio, including a sample of figure drawing or portraiture.

Scenic Construction

This fellowship is focused on the hands-on development of skills in scenic construction and working in a professional production shop. The fellow will learn to face challenges as a builder, welder, theatrical rigger, scenic automator, and draftsperson. The fellow works with state-of-the-art equipment to transform raw materials such as woods, metals, and plastics into complex scenic elements. The scenic construction aspects of the fellowship will take place in the scene shop facility, with scenic installations in our Roda Theatre fly house and fixed-grid Peet’s Theatre.

Harry Weininger Sound

This fellowship offers training in audio and video production at a professional level. Mentored by the Sound Supervisor and Video Supervisor, the fellow will learn about system design, signal flow, automated and non-automated systems, wireless microphones, recording, intercom systems, repairing equipment, rigging, video playback systems, projection equipment, cameras, troubleshooting, and how to collaborate well with colleagues. From challenging dramas to large-scale musicals, the sound fellow will be exposed to many different styles of production. Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in engineering as well as design, experience setting up and programming shows, computer networking experience, PC and Mac familiarity, patience, and strong organizational skills.

Stage Management

This fellowship provides a unique opportunity to learn all aspects of the work of Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) stage managers. Beginning with attendance at production meetings, the fellow takes part in the rehearsal process, technical rehearsals, and in many instances will stay with a production through the completion of the run. This demanding fellowship involves the fellow in every facet of the production.

Important information

Academic credit

If your school would like to translate your fellowship experience into academic units, Berkeley Rep is happy to work with your school advisor. Please provide any paperwork with your application.

Living expenses

Berkeley Rep provides a small stipend to assist with daily expenses, including transportation. The stipend is $8,050 (total), disbursed equally over the 11.5 months of the fellowship.

Housing and transportation

Housing is available for all 15 fellows for the duration of the program. We are unable to accommodate partners or pets. Housing is within walking distance of the Theatre. Berkeley and the Bay Area have excellent public transportation—buses and trains. We recommend managing without a car since it is difficult to park in Berkeley. There are car-sharing consortiums for those who need occasional access to a car.

International applicants

Berkeley Rep is only able to accept applicants who have taken care of the necessary documents to work in the United States (i.e. visas, green cards, citizenship, etc.). Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for more than one fellowship?

Applicants can apply to two positions (max) on the application form—one being your primary choice, the second being an alternative choice. Please only indicate an alternative choice if it is an area in which you are fully qualified and interested.

Do you offer fellowships in acting or directing?

We do not offer acting or directing fellowships; however, we do offer classes in both areas at the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre.

Do you offer summer fellowships?

Berkeley Rep’s season generally runs August—June, which does not allow us to offer summer fellowships. All fellowships are 11.5 months unless otherwise arranged.

The Ground Floor summer residency program offers short-term summer ambassadorships. Ambassadors work with artistic and administrative staff in supporting this exciting new play development program. More info.

Can I participate in the fellowship during my college winter break?

Our fellowships generally run July–June. Occasionally, additional interviews will be held if openings occur during the season. Please check “current availability.”

Do you accept international applications?

What kind of education do I need to have?

The fellowship at Berkeley Rep is aimed for applicants looking to make the jump from the academic world to the professional world of theatre. While a college degree is not required, we ask that applicants have some practical knowledge and experience in theatre. We do not accept high school students.

Can I hold a job during my fellowship?

For maximum learning opportunities, all Berkeley Rep fellowships are designed around the regular workings of the Theatre and often take up 40+ hours per week. The Berkeley Rep fellowship and stipend are designed to cover basic living expenses. While it is possible to hold a part-time job with some fellow positions, we strongly recommend against it. Applicants should secure independent funds for other expenses they may incur during their fellowship.

Should I include a portfolio with my application?

Please check the description of the fellowship for which you are applying for specific requirements.

Who should I have write my letters of recommendation?

Ideally, your recommendation letters should be written by people who know you and your work well. Employers, professors, supervisors, and mentors are usually the best. These should be people who have seen your past work and can speak of your potential for future work. These do not need to be theatre professionals since most skills can cross over career lines.

Emilia Lirman · Bret C. Harte Directing Fellow

Emilia LirmanEmilia “Emi” Lirman is an Argentine-American director. She graduated with a BA in Drama and Theatre Arts from Columbia University. Emi began her professional theatre career as a casting assistant for Jim Carnahan and has since held many casting and production assistant roles in New York. She has worked as an assistant and associate director in NYC, Miami, Boston, and Buenos Aires. Most recently Emi directed a new musical in development with the New Victory Theater and Musical Theatre Factory. In addition to her passion for directing, Emi is a playwright and comedian. She is a member of the Greenhouse Playwriting Co-Op and a member of the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Academy Program.

Leah Mesh-Ferguson · Company Management Fellow

Leah Mesh-FergusonLeah is very grateful to be working at Berkeley Rep for the 2018–19 season! After serving as an ambassador for The Ground Floor’s Summer Residency Lab in 2017, Leah knew she had to return to Berkeley Rep. She is a recent graduate of McGill University with a BA in Drama & Theatre Studies and Cultural Studies. While in school, Leah served as the president of TVM: Student Television at McGill and the stage manager for the McGill Savoy Society. After 10 years of stage management, Leah is very excited to be diving into the administrative side of theatre. Leah is from Arlington, MA.

Nina Feliciano · Development Fellow

Nina FelicianoNina graduated summa cum laude from Santa Clara University with a BS in Sociology and a minor in Musical Theatre. She has been involved with Children’s Musical Theater San Jose for 10 years as a performer, dance instructor, and assistant choreographer. In addition to college productions, Nina has performed extensively in the South Bay at theatres such as Cabrillo Stage and City Lights Theater Company. She has completed both administrative and artistic internships at The Performing Arts Project in North Carolina. Nina has served as a program evaluator for TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, Teatro Visión, and the Runaways Lab Theatre.

Si Mon’ Emmett · Education Fellow

Si Mon’ EmmettSi Mon’ is a native of Dallas and an alumna of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. She recently graduated with a BFA in the UTeach Theatre program at the University of Texas at Austin, now a certified Texas educator for theatre arts. She has worked with Dallas Children’s Theater (Dallas), Victory Gardens Theater (Chicago), and VORTEX Repertory Company and Teatro Vivo (Austin). Outside of her work in theatre education, you can find her spinning as a DJ with Chulita Vinyl Club.

Kirsten Pribula · Graphic Design Fellow

Kirsten PribulaKirsten is a native of Centerville, OH. Kirsten received her associate’s degree in Visual Communications from Sinclair Community College and her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with cum laude honors in Graphic Design at Ohio University. Kirsten worked for Catapult Creative as an intern in Dayton, OH as well as freelanced for several nonprofit organizations. What makes Kirsten interesting is that she is Deaf! As a Deaf designer, Kirsten has a passion for visually communicating her ideas through the use of color, texture, and visual language to convey a message or a problem, no matter what type of medium that may be. Kirsten is excited for this new journey with Berkeley Repertory Theatre and she is looking forward to learning and growing as a graphic designer.

Brooke Vlasich · Marketing / Digital Communications Fellow

Brooke VlasichBrooke is a native of Cedar City, UT and has lived and worked in London, Denver, Chicago, San Diego, Ashland (Oregon), and Piura (Peru). She recently graduated from Southern Utah University with a MFA in Arts Administration. While studying at the university, she worked at the Utah Shakespeare Festival and the Southern Utah Museum of Art in marketing, communications, and gift shop management. She is looking forward to sharing her passion for the arts and culture, digital marketing, and love of learning with her colleagues at Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Madeleine Rostami · Peter F. Sloss Literary / Dramaturgy Fellow

Madeleine RostamiMadeleine recently graduated from Northwestern University, where she studied Theatre and Cognitive Science. An aspiring dramaturg and teaching artist, her favorite projects include dramaturgy for the world premiere of Laura Schellhardt’s Ever in the Glades, three years with Northwestern’s Agnes Nixon Playwriting Festival, and working with Seesaw Theatre, an organization that creates original work for individuals with disabilities. Madeleine is a past ambassador for The Ground Floor’s Summer Residency Lab and is thrilled to be back at Berkeley Rep to continue learning! Outside the theatre, she can be found on the hunt for the perfect slice of pie.

Suzann Cornelison · Costumes Fellow

Suzann CornelisonSuzann is a passionate artist with a true, deep love for telling stories through theatre and design. She recently graduated from Stephens College, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatrical Costume Design. She has designed six collegiate productions, her favorite being A Gulag Mouse. Her last year at Stephens she served as the production stage manager for the Warehouse Theatre Company. This summer she had the pleasure to design and stitch for Festival 56. She is enthusiastic and honored to be working with Berkeley Rep and is looking forward to the challenges and growth ahead.

Rae Lynn Crocker · Lighting / Electrics Fellow

Rae Lynn CrockerRae is a lighting designer from Southern California and she is ecstatic to begin her journey with Berkeley Rep as the lighting and electrics fellow! She graduated from the University of California, Irvine in 2017 with a BA in Drama and Honors in Design. Recently, Rae worked at Milwaukee Repertory Theater as the lighting and electrics resident and at The Old Globe as the lighting design intern. In her spare time, Rae enjoys reading, watching stand-up comedy, playing board games, and having movie marathons with her cat.

Jossue Gallardo · Production Management Fellow

Jossue GallardoJossue is a native from Covina, CA. He recently graduated from California State University East Bay with a BA in Theatre Arts focusing in an option of Technology and Design. Jossue is originally a stage manager, who has decided to expand his career options and delve into production management. His past stage managing shows include Cabaret at CSU East Bay, The Brother’s Size in San Francisco with Theatre Rhinoceros, and Cymbeline at CSU East Bay. He also won the national award at KCACTF 2017, Region 7, for his stage management of Cymbeline. Jossue was a prop crew runner in the apprenticeship program at Santa Fe Opera for their 2017 season. He is glad to be able to be part of the Berkeley Rep family as is ready to absorb all the knowledge they will offer.

She received her first bachelor’s degree, in psychology, from the University of Colorado, and her second bachelor’s degree, in theatre arts, from the University of Northern Colorado, where she graduated summa cum laude. She has had the privilege of working as a props artisan for an array of organizations, including the Central City Opera, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and Universal Creative. Her artistic skills include furniture making, fine carpentry, upholstery, painting, and fabrication. When not working on props, she enjoys writing and recording original music.

Serena Yau · Scenic Art Fellow

Serena YauSerena is a scenic painter and designer. She graduated from Smith College with a BA in Theatre with an emphasis in Design, and spent the past summer as the scenic charge at Interlochen Center for the Arts. Select scenic design and painting credits include: Smith College’s Men on Boats, Tiger Be Still, Steel Magnolias, and Panopera Production’s The Marriage of Figaro.

Heather Moosher · Scenic Construction Fellow

Heather MoosherHeather is so excited to be the scenic construction fellow for this season. She just graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a BA in Theatre Design and Production. She worked as the assistant technical director on the UMBC Campus, for the productions of Twelfth Night and Machinal, and worked as a scenic carpenter for various theatres in the D.C. area. In her free time, Heather loves to go rock climbing.

Courtney Jean · Harry Weininger Sound Fellow

Courtney JeanCourtney is a sound designer and engineer with experience mostly at a university level. She began her journey into theatre and sound at Ballenger Creek Middle School where she was assigned to be the sound mixer for their production of Beauty and the Beast. Through this show, she fell in love with theatre and sound mixing. Courtney continued to work as a sound engineer and designer at Tuscarora High School and through college at Kent State University. She is honored to learn and grow in her career as the Harry Weininger sound fellow for the 2018–19 season here at Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Symone Paige Crews · Stage Management Fellow

Symone Paige CrewsSymone is a Howard University alumna with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts Administration. She is heavily interested in receiving diverse work experience. Her recent internships include Ms. Debbie Allen, Sundance, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. These experiences have afforded her the blessing to now be a fellow at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Symone is grateful to her family and friends for their undying love and support. All the way from Durham, NC, Symone is excited to continue building upon her passions.
